Its all in the Head !! - Negative Impact of "Peer Pressure"
Headbutt
Footballing year - 2006, Italy won the FIFA WC. Thanks to Marco Matterazzi. He riled up the opposition's best - created a peer pressure which resulted in a famous headbutt... Guess what happened next - France's talisman Zinedine Zidane was shown the red card and he was walking off the field along with France's title hopes !
The provocation did create a peer pressure in Zidane's mind and boom - came the brain fade moment. Materazzi was still on the field taking his defensive position on field and France were short of an attacking midfield. In the end, it proved to be costly for France as they had to wait for 3 more editions to get their hands on the trophy again !
While Zidane went on to coach one of the most celebrated clubs - Real Madrid, while Materazzi became one amongst us by coaching Chennaiyin FC.
Singh is King
Rewind to the year 1999 - a domestic cricket match between Punjab & Bihar - U19 Cooch Behar Trophy. On the 1st day, Dhoni batted well and scored 84. But that evening, when Dhoni was returning back to the hostel, his eyes met Yuvraj who was full of swag and confidence. What followed was unreal - Yuvraj scored 358 - one more than Dhoni's team total. How do you dissect this?
It was Dhoni who decided to look back at him while Yuvraj Singh didn’t pay any importance to Dhoni. Dhoni was the one who lost the psychological battle - pressure of peer's performance !
While Yuvraj set the record for fastest 50 in T20Is, Dhoni slowly grew to the stature of 'Thala' with all the "Yellove" (yellow love) !
Valimai Update
Valimai is about how the system and society judges people based on certain parameters like job and success. The film is packed with a strong message of peer pressure and social challenges that the youth has been going through in modern society.
While some are able to achieve it, some aren't. At a point in time, they are pressured by their parents and relatives-- comparisons are drawn. They end up taking the wrong path and resort to drugs and alcoholism.
We still have characters like Chatur 'Silencer' Ramalingam and as long as they exist, a peer pressure is definitely on cards - unless it's a film by Rajkumar Hirani
What is pressure? Its
Force per unit area… Can’t help, I’m an Engineer!
Comparisons and
societal pressure limit your area of thinking – when this area is shrunk, what
happens? The deliverable is the same – that’s why the term “peers”… At the same
force, you are subjected to more pressure! The lion cub amongst a flock of sheep would have remained a sheep had it not seen its mom! Even "Captain Cool" - Dhoni was intimated by Yuvraj as mentioned
earlier.
